What Makes Monita Tequila the Best Tequila

You may be someone who has already their spirit of choice or someone else who doesn't like the taste of alcohol at all. If you are considering switching to a new brand or trying it for the first time, how do you choose the best tequila for you?

Is it the price? Is it the taste? Is it the brand name? Or do you just close your eyes and point out a bottle?

When you want to select a tequila that you will actually enjoy, there's a lot to consider. But let's start with the basics!

What is tequila?

Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico

Tequila is a type of alcohol that is primarily produced in the region surrounding the city of Tequila, located about 40 miles northwest of  Guadalajara, Mexico. It's made from the blue agave plant, which is native to the area. The production of tequila has a long history going all the way back to the 16th century, and has become an important part of Mexican culture and history.

A spirit can only be considered tequila if it comes from the sanctioned regions of Mexico, anything distilled outside of that can't be labeled tequila.

How is tequila made?

Tequila is typically made from 100% blue Weber agave, grown in specific regions of Mexico (Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas). The agave is cooked and then fermented, before being distilled twice. The resulting liquid is then aged for a period of time, usually in oak barrels.

Did you know that to be considered 'tequila' the spirit's contents only needs to have 51% or more of actual, blue agave tequila, the rest can be made up with fillers?

The length of aging can affect the flavor and quality of the tequila. Aged tequila, like añejo, is generally considered to be smoother and more complex in flavor than unaged tequila, or blanco.

When trying to figure out what is the best tequila, the flavor should be smooth, with equal parts sweetness and acidity (with minimal burn), and can include an array of flavors..

Budget may be a factor when searching for the bottle you'll add to your home bar. It may be tempting to scan the tequila options and immediately opt for the one with the lowest price tag. Listen, times are hard. But before you get to the check out, do keep in mind that even though a bottle has 'tequila' on the label, it doesn't always mean that it is 100% blue agave tequila.

Have you ever had someone say, "No way, tequila isn't for me. I had the worst experience the last time I had it." The first question would be, "Was it 100% agave tequila or did it just say 'tequila'?" If you didn't see 100% agave on the label that means there could've been other additives that could cause a bad reaction, such as a hangover. Then the follow-up question would be, "Was that someone you?"

Finding the best tequila for you may take some trial and error. But you can't go wrong with a tequila that is made up of only agave with a natural sweetness that doesn't burn. If that's what you're looking for, you've come to the right place.
